Fa-fa-fa-fa-fashion

My winter 2007 IK arrived yesterday (the one with "Jennifer Garner" on the cover!) - some great patterns and some "meh" patterns - I was reflecting on IK and realised that with the exception of the embossed leaves socks, I haven't actually made anything from any of the IK's I have - not because I haven't liked things, it's just a matter of time, priorities and the lengthy queue I already have (not to mention a bit of a sock drive at present).

It led me to wonder whether, in 5 or 10 or 20 years time, will I look back on this edition of IK and still love the patterns I love now. Or will I just laugh at the fashions, at the hair and makeup, colours and styling choices? (and if the latter, how does that happen - has always fascinated me what makes us love something and then laugh at it 20 years later!)

Like I did recently at these:
Received from a friend of my mum's, who thought I might like them!
So much fun!!

Oh, would you look at that hair!! I can't even get past the hair. Let me guess, mid-80s? Egads.

Oh dear lord. I always notice the make up first and foremost in those sorts of shots. Always. It makes me wonder what we'll be noticing about make up in photos now.

I was given a bunch of stuff like that too - a friend used to come back from op shops with box loads of the things. I didn't know what to do with them all!

And I have only made embossed leaves socks, too, although I'm currently doing another IK sock pattern so I'm one up on you!

I find that even though I laugh at some of my old knitting books, some of the patterns are still old stand-bys. Love the lion's mane on that VillaWool book. Too funny!

Hey I bought a Totem-Jet/Patons book 485, Caressa 10 Knitting designs book yesterday all patterns are for males, all males shown have BIG fluffy manes of hair and are looking out at the horizon. H wants me to knit him a jersey, I can make it look like it is going to happen. Really quite nervous about disappointing will need your guidance like alot.

Hey have a great BIRTHDAY weekend!!!

LOL @Villawool man. I'm sorry, I'm terrible.

I do wonder the same thing. But the thing about IK, to me, versus VK, is that IK tends to print patterns that, for the most part, are timeless & classic. VK, on the other hand, like Vogue, prints the trendy patterns that, by the time I finish knitting them, will be out of style!

Oh yes - the 80s - funniest thing - still have some of the jumpers I knitted back then!!!!

I try to knit at least one ting from each IW - but I'm falling behind a bit!

hee hee, old knitting patterns are hilarious, aren't they?

I don't think I'll need to wait that long for some of the IK patterns to date - I just went through some 2005 ones and already am thinking: what the?

still, I can't throw them out, because I am the notorious collector!

yes just visit any Op Shop in the land and the % of 80s patterns there will be huge because no one wants the buggers... baby patterns of any vintage will be snapped up and old Enid Gilcrist kiddies clothes ones but the 80s stuff just sits there getting sadder and sadder.

I never forget the time I saw a photo of Deb Conway on the cover of a Paton's pattern book at her pouty 80s best. Laugh, I nearly had kittens! Having said that, I've a Fair Isle jumper pattern that I think must come in at around 1993 - the fella's haircut and the description "... designed to be a generous fit in keeping with today's fashions" are the indicators - that I'm totally going to knit someday. (Yeah, same story with the IK's. Never knitted anything out of them but, my, they make great eye candy : ))

Happy Birthday!!

I was thinking the very same thing the other day, wondering if we'd think our current 'cool fashions' are totally silly in 2027...

I also wonder when not so cringe-making pattern books will start to appear in op shops!

I reckon we could have a 'knit from your magazines/books' challenge next year :)

Yikes! Have you seen that alleged "JC Penny's catalog" blog post thing that's been going around? It's very funny - the author shows all these pix that are hysterical (and furniture, including a fun fur toilet seat cover!) Let me know and I'll forward it to you if you haven't seen it! It's so funny.
