Somewhere over the rainbow

Husby and I went to see Ausralia last night (at our new local, the Roseville Cinema!). You know, I really liked it. Yep, it was schmaltzy, and verged on parody (especially the first couple of scenes between Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman) and Nicole's accent was terrible (although became less noticeable as the movie progressed) and her outfits were ridiculous (albeit beautiful) but if you let yourself go, just be in the moment while watching it, and don't let yourself think too much, it was great.

Go on, go and see it. Amazing scenery, the gorgeous Nicole outfits (including a very nice knitted cardigan - very fine gauge so probably machine knitted, but could definitely be recreated in 4ply/fingering yarn if you so desired), and mmmmHughJackman. When he arrived at the ball all clean shaven and in a dinner suit, every woman in the cinema sighed - literally!! It was very funny!

And if you need some further entertainment you can play "spot the Aussie actor" the whole way through the movie - pretty much anyone who's anyone in the Australian film industry is in it somewhere.

To end on a serious note -see it if for nothing else but to remind us that the Prime Minister's apology to the Stolen Generations this year was well overdue.

You know, I think I'm just going to see so that if I must insist on bagging it, I can do so with the justification of having actually seen it.

And if I like it, I'll eat my hat.

That said, anything that reinforces the importance of the apology is fine by me.

I want to see this one! Except I haven't seen a movie in a theater since 2001, and I doubt that will change anytime soon. Usually by the time movies come out on DVD I've completely forgotten what I wanted to see. I'm hopelessly behind in pop culture.

I've been dying to see it - if for no other reason than it reminds me of you guys!

If only Nicole Kidman wasn't in it, I'd go! But, alas, I just can't put myself through such... torture!

I want to see it but no one will go with me.
Dh would go with me but sleep the entire length, I've heard it goes for 4hrs is that true? If so do they stop for a potty break?

Very handy little cinema there at Roseville. Reel next door is a popular place to eat too.. Another similar oldfashioned cinema is the Odeon at Hornsby. Very cheap too, over by the RSL.

You left a comment on my entry at Summer of Socks about Turramurra drapery. If Roseville is now local to you, I assume you have been to Greta's at Lindfield? I'm a 15 minute walk up the line from there.

Hey there's nothing in the word verification box except a question mark. Seems odd. I hope this posts.

Our local newspapers panned the movie and we decided to wait for the dvd. But Hugh Jackman in a suit, my heart goes pitter pat just thinking about it. I can take or leave Nicole Kidman but Mr. Jackman.....

That's the hardest part about seeing movies here, remembering which ones I wanted to see by the time they trickle out to the sticks.

But they are cheap!

yes i think its that last part that will get me in, about bloody time a 'history of australia' movie actually had some indigenous aspect to it. sigh.

Oh, I'm going. I anticipate laughing everytime Nicole Kidman opens her mouth. I really don't think she's a very good actress.

I told Mr QM we should totally indulge in the whole dramatic fest of it, and get tickets at the Premium theatre, but he didn't seem keen!

Dare I? Dare I even say it? I loathe La Kidman. There I feel so much better now. But Hugh, ah, Hugh is yummy!

Oh I love the Roseville cinema! We used to live just down the road and loved walking up to watch a movie. Now we live in Auckland New Zealand, a bit far to walk now.

The previews are breathtaking! I think it's worth the ticket just to see Kidman and Jackman.

I went determined not to like it, and it ended up winning me over. OK - it was super-indulgent and had too many stories going on, but it looked lovely, and I agree completely RR - Hugh Jackman. Sigh. It was a mums and bubs session and everytime Nicole Kidman's forzen forehead loomed on the screen as she lunged for the beautiful Aboriginal boy, all the babies screamed. It was hilarious (well as hilarious as a cinema full of screaming babies can be).
